What is SSC CGL?
SSC CGL is a national-level exam. It is not for a single post. When you clear this exam, you can get selected for many different types of Group B and Group C posts.

SSC CGL Exam Structure (Pattern)
The exam is conducted in two main stages, called Tiers. Both are conducted online (Computer Based Test).
Tier 1 (Qualifying Nature)
This is the first stage. Passing this is mandatory to move to the next stage, but the marks of Tier 1 are generally NOT added to the final merit list. It contains 100 questions capable of 200 marks.
- General Intelligence & Reasoning: 25 Questions
- General Awareness: 25 Questions
- Quantitative Aptitude (Maths): 25 Questions
- English Comprehension: 25 Questions
Time given: 1 Hour.
Tier 2 (Deciding Stage)
This is the most important stage. Your final selection depends on your marks here. It has three sections:
- Section 1: Maths & Reasoning
- Section 2: English & General Awareness
- Section 3: Computer Knowledge (Qualifying) & Typing Test
Eligibility Criteria
Before you apply, you must check if you are eligible.
- Education: You must have a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university. Final year students can also apply provisionally.
- Age Limit: It varies by post. Generally, it is between 18 to 30 years. Age relaxation is available for OBC, SC, and ST candidates as per government rules.
Brief Syllabus Overview
You don’t need to study everything under the sun. Focus on these core areas:
- Maths: Number System, Arithmetic (Percentage, Profit/Loss, Interest), Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry.
- Reasoning: Analogies, Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, Series, Non-verbal reasoning.
- English: Grammar rules, Vocabulary (Synonyms/Antonyms), Reading Comprehension.
- General Awareness: Current Affairs, History, Geography, Polity, Science (Basic level).
Selection Process
- Apply online when notification comes.
- Give Tier 1 Exam.
- If you clear the cutoff, give Tier 2 Exam.
- Document Verification (conducted by the department).
- Final Merit List is released based on Tier 2 marks and post preference.
